Hunting Lila casts Lila

Posted on 17th May, by Sarah in Hunting Lila, News. 1 Comment

Very excited to share this first bit of news about the Hunting Lila movie:

“UK-based Pari Passu Films is prepping YA project Hunting Lila and has attached American Honey breakout Sasha Lane to the title role. Oscar winning VFX supervisor Paul J Franklin is attached to make his directorial debut on the picture that’s based on the first in the series of books written by Sarah Alderson.” – Deadline.

To read the full press release click here.

Sasha is garnering rave reviews at the moment for her star turn in Andrea Arnold’s American Honey and I couldn’t be more thrilled that she’s going to be playing Lila.

It’s also been an absolute pleasure to work with the incredibly talented, multiple Oscar and Bafta-winning Paul Franklin. It’s an all round brilliant team and I’ll be bringing you more casting news over the summer so … Read More »

Double Whammy Book Birthday

Posted on 6th August, by Sarah in General. No Comments

About six years ago I was sitting on the 7.38 train to London Bridge and I turned to John and said:

‘I’m going to write a blog. What do you think about the title ‘Can we live here?’

Back then I think I possibly harboured a tiny hope that maybe one day I might turn it into a book or find a way to monetise it somehow. I mean, people did that back then. Remember Belle du Jour? I wasn’t a call girl but I thought maybe there was some potential, not to become a call girl, but to write a blog.

I guess one thing you can say about me is that I never let that small thing called probability bother me. I never weigh odds (probably because I’m not very good at maths) or think ‘well, the chances of that happening are zero … Read More »

Next Mila Gray novel announced!

Posted on 20th March, by Sarah in General. No Comments

THIS IS ONE MOMENT will be out in September (published by Pan Macmillan).

Didi Monroe’s waited her whole life for the type of romance you see in the movies, so when Hollywood heartthrob Zac Ridgemont sweeps her off her feet, Didi believes she might finally have met the one.

While Zac’s away filming for the summer, Didi begins her internship at a military hospital in California. There, she meets wounded Marine Noel Walker.

Frustrated on the outside and broken on the inside, Walker’s a pain-in-the-ass patient who refuses all help.

Yet Didi can’t help but be drawn to him, and though he’s strictly out of bounds it soon becomes impossible to ignore the sparks flying between them.

As the attraction simmers into dangerous territory, Didi finds herself falling hard for a man she knows is going to break her heart. Because Walker doesn’t believe in love … Read More »

First Chapter of Come Back To Me

Posted on 21st November, by Sarah in Mila Gray. No Comments

JESSA

A whorl in the glass distorts the picture, like a thumbprint smear over a lens. I’m halfway down the stairs, gathering my hair into a ponytail, thoughts a million miles away, when the blur outside the window pulls me up short.

I take another step, the view clears, and when I realize what I’m seeing, who I’m seeing, my stomach plummets, the air leaving my lungs like a final exhalation. My arms fall slowly to my sides. My brain fights my body’s instinct to turn and run back upstairs, to tear into the bathroom and lock the door. I’m frozen. This moment . . . this is the one you dream about, play over in your mind, the darkest of daydreams, one furnished by movies and by real-life stories you’ve overheard your whole life.

You imagine over and over how you’ll cope, … Read More »

The Pros & Cons of being a writer

Posted on 19th November, by Sarah in General, Writing. No Comments

I recently wrote a post about the pros and cons of being a writer for a website called We Heart Writing.

Here’s a little excerpt

Many people dream of being a writer and seeing their books on the shelves of Barnes & Noble. And believe me, the moment you get the call telling you your book has sold to a big publisher is a life-altering moment. ♥
People glamorize and fantasize about the lives of writers. Personally I like to imagine Hemingway-style excess; empty wine bottles littering the deck, the clack clack of keyboard keys, a view of the French riviera, literary shindigs where the glitterati meet and mingle and get up to all sorts of lovely mischief. And though there are shades of this (empty wine bottles, keyboard keys clacking, mischief) the reality is much less glam.

I’ve published six books with major … Read More »

Self Publishing vs Traditional Publishing: Which is better?

Posted on 3rd October, by Sarah in General. No Comments

Author Becky Wicks and I are guest speakers at the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival this week, where we’re discussing all things “marketing” as well as YA and NA books. We’re also taking a look at traditional versus self-publishing…

Being a successful author these days means knowing how to market and promote yourself and your book, and let us tell you, it doesn’t matter whether you’re traditionally published or going the indie/self-publishing route – you’re going to have to work your booties off to get noticed. With our latest new adult novels, I published with Pan Macmillan and Becky chose the indie route. What we discovered was that the PR and book marketing efforts required to make our books a success was pretty much the same.

1. Marketing your book is going to take TIME. LOTS OF IT.
It sounds crazy, especially if all you really want to do … Read More »

How to write full time / make money as an author.

Posted on 4th August, by Sarah in General. 1 Comment

Five years into my career as an author and I’m finally at the stage where I write full time and I need only submit an opening chapter and synopsis to my publishers in order to get a book deal. I make money as an author. I don’t take that for granted. I’m aware that next year I could be in the position of not being able to sell a book to any publisher (this doesn’t scare me that much as I’ve already self-published and would do so again).

It’s become harder than ever to get a book deal. I’ve seen my advances shrink over the last four years. And they were never exactly big to begin with. Publishing is a difficult business to be in. It offers very little in the way of security or certainty. Between worrying about reviews, sales, … Read More »

Drive, Terminator, New York & human trafficking

Posted on 24th June, by Sarah in General, Writing. No Comments

I’m at a kids birthday party when a woman I barely know grabs me by the arm and declares: ‘I have an idea that you should write about.’

I glance over her shoulder for the exits, my smile fixing into place, wondering if I should tell her it’s not ideas I’m lacking just hours in the day. ’Human trafficking,’ she announces, ‘you need to write about it.’

I tell her with an apologetic shrug that I write young adult fiction; ‘lots of car chases, hot boys and kissing. That sort of thing.’ Even as I say it, I can feel myself shrinking in her estimation, and, it must be admitted, my own. She’s talking about human trafficking and how it affects over thirty million people worldwide and I’m talking about girls with mind powers and shape-shifting demons.

I left the party with a … Read More »

Advice for aspiring writers

Posted on 23rd April, by Sarah in News, Writing. 2 Comments

This is the second post in a series about traditional publishing vs indie publishing and on how to promote your books.

I have three books coming out in the next six weeks: Out of Control, The Sound (in the US) and Come Back To Me (my first new adult novel being published by Pan Macmillan in June). My friend and fellow author Becky Wicks (who I write with under the pen name Lola Salt)  is also publishing her first new adult novel Before He Was Famous, but after writing three books for Harper Collins this time she is going the indie route.

We thought it would be really interesting to document how we are both going about promoting our books and the differences between the traditional publishing and indie routes.

The first post can be read over on Becky’s … Read More »

Check out The Sound Trailer (click the link)

So happy to be able to show you the trailer we’ve been working on for The Sound, to celebrate its release in the US in May. We managed to pull the entire thing together from Bali including finding a cast who not only looked exactly like my characters but who could also act (and how gorgeous are they??? Jesse was even better than the one in my imagination and Ren was just beyond perfect for the role). It was insane how it all came together.

We shot over three days on the beach in Bali, up in the botanical gardens (the night scene in the woods) and at various friends’ houses. I couldn’t believe how long it took to shoot 90 seconds. I could have written a book in that time. But it was so … Read More »

WORLD BOOK DAY & a short story

It’s World Book Day next week (the 7th March to be precise) and I’m thrilled to be involved. It’s a UK thing and lots of authors are taking part this year, including the incredible Patrick Ness, Will Hill and Sarah J. Maas.

As well as lots of competitions and tips and books for a pound, there’s also an iTunes app which contains 10 YA short stories by awesome authors and ME! And it’s FREE!

That’s right, I’ve written a story all about Ryder and Amber and how they met.

Grab your copy of Turning Amber and find out just how she met Ryder, why she fell for him, what the hell Demos was doing in a thrift store in Ventura and why it’s not a good idea to steal from a gang of Hell’s Angels.

An interview with one half of Lola Salt – Becky Wicks

Posted on 11th February, by Sarah in General, Writing. No Comments

Did you know that I also write chick-lit under the pen name Lola Salt, together with the fabulously talented Harper Collins author Becky Wicks?

Tomorrow, our FREE comedy novel will be featured alongside best-selling, world-famous Irish author and the queen of chick-lit, Marian Keyes, on the new chick-lit section on Wattpad. The Extraordinary Life of Lara Craft (not Croft) is a fun story concocted by the two of us. Here’s my interview with Becky.

So Becky, you’re one half of Lola Salt, do you want to tell the story of how we met and decided to write Lara?

The Extraordinary Life of Lara Craft (not Croft)

Posted on 20th January, by Sarah in News, Writing. 2 Comments

I’m super excited to share the news that my first adult book is out now!

It’s published under the pen name Lola Salt and it’s a comedy romance. Think Bridget Jones if Jackie Collins wrote it.

It’s a collaboration with the fabulous Becky Wicks. We met when Becky was in Bali writing a travel memoir and, over a bottle of wine and a rant about 50 Shades, we decided to have a go at writing erotica – I mean, how hard could it be?

Turns out, very. We giggled too much writing the naughty scenes, so eventually we decided to quit trying to write erotica and stick with comedy…and so The Extraordinary Life of Lara Craft (not Croft) was born. We sent our Lara off on a series of adventures around the world; on her adventures she gets to meet a sparkly twihard who’s … Read More »

The sequel to FATED is released today!

Posted on 29th November, by Sarah in Severed. 8 Comments

SEVERED, the sequel to FATED, is out today!

It’s been a really long time in the coming…so I’m thrilled it’s finally available on Amazon. Grab a copy now.

The third and (probably) final book – SHADOWED – is out in the new year.

SEVERED – Chapter 1

Posted on 29th October, by Sarah in Severed. 8 Comments

In the run up to Severed’s release in a couple of weeks I’m posting some things like the Soundtrack, character quotes (on my FB page) and even this…the first chapter…to wet your appetites.

Chapter 1

The headlights of the car punctured the black blanket sky, illuminating rolling countryside which ceded eventually to the sprawl of suburbs and then finally to the brutal glare of the city. But Evie barely noticed. She didn’t even ask Lucas where they were going. As she clenched and unclenched her hands, which were still sticky with blood, all she could think about was what had happened back in Riverview. And about the dead they’d left behind.

She stared down at her bare feet, which were laced with dirt and mud and the stomach-churning remains of scorched Thirster flesh, and her teeth began chattering so loudly that Lucas reached … Read More »

Press Release: New book deal

Posted on 25th October, by Sarah in General, News. No Comments

I’m thrilled to finally be able to announce that I have signed with Simon & Schuster for two new books. Here’s the press release.

Thursday 11th October 2012, London—Simon & Schuster Children’s Books today announced a new deal with teen author, Sarah Alderson.

Venetia Gosling, Editorial Director at S&S, acquired World rights in two new stand-alone novels from Amanda Preston at Luigi Bonomi Associates. The first novel, entitled The Sound, will be published in August 2013, with the second novel, provisionally entitled Control, to come in 2014.

In The Sound, aspiring music journalist Ren Kingston takes a job nannying for a wealthy family on the exclusive island of Nantucket, playground for Boston’s elite, hoping for a low-key summer reading books and blogging about bands. Boys are firmly off the agenda. What she doesn’t count on is falling in with a bunch of party-loving … Read More »

SEQUELS…(and other things)

Posted on 23rd August, by Sarah in General, Hunting Lila. 13 Comments

OK, so I’ve been getting so many emails in recent weeks. All of them lovely and all of them asking the question…

WILL THERE BE ANOTHER BOOK AFTER LOSING LILA?

So I figured I would post my answer here to save myself from getting RSI. As of now (August 2012) I have not written a third Lila book. However, that is not to say it won’t happen.

On the upside the film of Hunting Lila is in the early stages of development and if that does get made (BIG IF) then I will probably write a third book. But only if I think I can do the story justice!

Another reason I haven’t written a third Lila book yet is because I’ve been busy writing lots of other books.

The sequel to Fated – Severed – will be out in January 2013 as an ebook. … Read More »

Character Interviews

Posted on 18th August, by Sarah in Hunting Lila, Losing Lila. 6 Comments

Everyone keeps asking me to write more from Suki’s perspective and from Demos’s. I’d LOVE to see Suki in Manga and I’d also love to do a Demos spin off (maybe back in time to when he met Lila’s mum), but there just aren’t enough hours in the day right now. That’s not to say never though. There’s so much scope with the secondary characters in the book and I love them so much.

Anyway, I have done a few interviews with the characters which you may not have caught. So here are a few links.

Here’s an earlier post with links to two deleted scenes.

and then there are these too…

An interview with Demos, Harvey and Key.

A chat with Suki & Nate

A Valentine’s Day Q&A with Lila & Alex

Another Q&A with Lila … Read More »

Losing Lila Countdown

Posted on 16th July, by Sarah in Competitions, Losing Lila. 1 Comment

Not long now until Losing Lila is released. I’ve been busy with interviews for the blog tour which is kicking off on August 2nd. Here’s the details.

It includes several character interviews with Demos, Suki and Nate as well as me reading from the first chapter. I’m also super excited for the post on Eleusinian Mysteries because that’s an interview between the actress Myanna Buring (who stars as Tanya Denali in Twilight) and me.

Early reviews are coming in and are so far so fantastic. Check them out here.

And don’t forget to check out my Facebook page for details of the competition to win a signed copy.

Canadian Blog Tour interviews

Posted on 10th June, by Sarah in Hunting Lila. 1 Comment

I recently took part in a really cool blog tour to celebrate the launch of Hunting Lila in Canada.

Here’s links to some of the interviews I did in case you want to find out more:

1. An interview with snowdrop dreams of books, where I answer this very crucial question:

If you were stuck on a Deserted Island, what five books would you want to have with you?

I would want the SAS Survival Guide because I have no idea how to make fire, spear fish, create shelter or collect rainwater so this would be handy to have otherwise I’d die.
Can I swap a book for a person and bring Alex? He’d know what to do and then I could sit back and work on my tan.
I’d probably take Perfect Chemistry for those moments I want to escape from reality and … Read More »

Losing Lila Cover & Giveaway

Posted on 24th April, by Sarah in Competitions, Hunting Lila. 21 Comments

Very excitingly, Losing Lila’s cover is finally ready to be revealed to the world. What do you think?

I love the strapline: ‘It’s time to stop running and start fighting.’

I wanted it to express how this book is all about the action and Lila coming into her own. And she does. She kicks ASS. Am very excited about its release…just three more months now and counting. Expectations are high for this one and I so want it to deliver for all the fans and bloggers who loved Hunting Lila.

I can confirm that there’s tonnes more steam and some epic action scenes and a few more twists. All the characters from Hunting Lila are back in the sequel and all the questions still to be answered are finally resolved…Is Sara a goodie or a baddie? Is Jack alive? And if he … Read More »

How to get an agent

Posted on 6th March, by Sarah in Writing. 1 Comment

I got an agent when I was just like you (and by that I mean Googling ‘how to get an agent’ when I should have been finishing my manuscript and / or working).

I got one of the best agents on the planet in fact. OK I’m biased but she just negotiated a deal for my 4th and 5th books on manuscripts I haven’t even written yet (well one was a half-way written mess and the other was a three sentence synopsis that went something like ‘think Drive crossed with Bourne Supremacy with a really hot boy and um, it’s set in New York’) so yeah, allow me to call her the best agent on the planet.

I actually got two agents in the space of a week – both wanting to represent me for Hunting Lila. It felt like all my … Read More »

Embrassing video footage

Posted on 4th March, by Sarah in Fated. No Comments

Of me talking about Fated and my favourite characters and scenes.

This was my first ever video and it originally appeared at Book Probe Reviews. It might very well be my last. We’ll see.

As you can see, Alula (my daughter) did a much better 10 second job of selling the book. I think her video got a thousand times more hits than mine.

Character Inteviews & Deleted Scenes

Posted on 12th February, by Sarah in Fated, General, Hunting Lila. 3 Comments

One of my favourite things to do is interviews for blogs. It was an honour to be part of the Valentine’s month event run by Eleusinian Mysteries and Read Me Bookmark Me Love me.

The tour included two deleted scenes from Hunting Lila and two interviews; one with Alex & Lila and the other with Evie & Lucas

The first deleted scene comes from the first draft of Hunting Lila. Originally Lila wrote a letter to Alex which she planned to give to him on his birthday and have him open when she had gone back to London. It never made it to the final edit.

The second deleted scene was from a bunch of chapters that got edited out and reworked into the book now known as Hunting Lila. In that … Read More »

Editing

Posted on 23rd January, by Sarah in Writing. No Comments

I suck at editing. Thankfully I am lucky enough to have an editor AND a copy editor AND a proof reader. And I’m still having to blink in awe at that sentence.

I’m not a perfectionist so I really need all the help that I can get. I just finished a short story from Alex’s point of view, which is going in the back of Losing Lila and it took my agent to point out that I’d called one character by the wrong name for half the story.

My copy editor in particular picks up not so much the spelling and grammar errors but the continuity errors and repetitions. The places where I’ve said one thing on p.23 and then totally contradicted that on p.230. She also points out where references I’ve made to obscure 80s movies might go over the heads … Read More »

Instinct Over Intellect

Posted on 23rd January, by Sarah in Writing. 2 Comments

Today was an interesting day for me as a writer.

Last week I started writing two new books – simultaneously. I’m not sure what it is about me and upping the ante. With my penultimate book I challenged myself to write it in 30 days – just because. This time I’ve set myself 56 days to complete two books. Again – I’m not sure of the reason why. I just like having goals I suppose.

This means roughly writing 4000 words a day – about 2000 words on each manuscript. And I’m finding the exercise actually quite interesting. Those moments where I find myself losing attention or coming to a standstill on one I switch to the other and find myself fresh. So far it’s been easier to write two than to write one and to keep energised.

After writing my first two … Read More »

How to write a book in 30 days

Posted on 28th September, by Sarah in Writing. 2 Comments

So far this year I have written three entire novels (each around 86,000 words). That makes six books in just over two years.

One I wrote in 30 days just because I wanted to see if I could do it. That was kind of crazy though.I am now ready to take a rest. I feel mentally exhausted.

If my brain is a sponge it is wrung completely dry. It’s manky and fraying and no longer something you’d want to keep lying next to the bath. I need to lay it in a swimming pool of valium diluted with vodka and after that when it’s good and fluffy again I want to read a thousand books, travel around the world one more time and let it soak up some further inspiration until that sponge is saturated to the max.

But having said that, all … Read More »

Hunting Lila Book Launch!

Posted on 6th August, by Sarah in Hunting Lila. No Comments

Hunting Lila’s birthday was yesterday. In the weeks running up to the launch I had an inkling of what Kate Middleton must have felt like before marrying Royalty. Not that I had to stand in front of the eyes of the world in a white dress and no one was bestowing any title on me but I honestly couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep and was in a spiralling panic as the day came nearer. All those people looking at me – which given I used to act – wasn’t something I understood until I realised that publishing a book is a bit like standing naked in front of the world asking them to comment on your flaws.

So I did what any sensible girl would do in such a situation, I bought myself the most killer dress (Vivienne Westwood) which took all … Read More »

In Waterstones!

Posted on 30th July, by Sarah in Hunting Lila. No Comments

I’m right there on the table next to Stephenie Meyer and beneath the fantastic Divergent.

If the camera panned upwards you’d see my grinning like a loon. I’m on the table next to Stephenie Meyer.

My book.

Is on the table next to Breaking Dawn.

If you’d have told me this a year ago I would have laughed in your face at how ridiculous you were being. But look people – there it is. In Waterstones no less.

I signed my first copies in store. The staff in Waterstones were brilliant and invited me back to do a reading or signing. (The girl who works there looks just like Keira Knightley.)

I am still grinning like a loon. It’s particularly funny because Stephenie Meyer was the reason I started writing in the first place. I loved Twilight and then when I was struggling to think … Read More »

The perks of the Job

Posted on 2nd June, by Sarah in Writing. No Comments

The best thing about being an author, aside from the stupendousness of knowing that my ‘job’ requires me to plug myself into my imagination on a daily basis, stare vacantly into space, check out hot models on the internet and watch Buffy and Gossip Girl for um, research purposes, is obviously, the free books.

A year ago I met my editor and the team at Simon & Schuster for the very first time. I went with my agent to their office in London and the second I walked through the door my legs almost went from under me. Shaking hands, trembling stomach as butterflies started flurrying, it was like love at first sight.

I suddenly knew how Charlie felt when he stepped inside Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. The place was literally held up … Read More »

Trusting your instincts

Posted on 3rd May, by Sarah in Writing. 2 Comments

I have a book coming out in January 2012 called Fated. Here’s the blurb.

What happens when you discover you aren’t who you thought you were? And that the person you love is the person who will betray you? If your fate is already determined, can you fight it?

When Evie Tremain discovers that she’s the last in a long line of Demon slayers and that she’s being hunted by an elite band of assassins –Shapeshifters, Vampires and Mixen demons amongst them – she knows she can’t run. They’ll find her wherever she goes. Instead she must learn to stand and fight.

But when the half-human, half-Shadow Warrior Lucas Gray – is sent to spy on Evie and then ordered to kill her before she can fulfil a dangerous prophecy, their fates become inextricably linked. The war that has raged for one thousand … Read More »

Hunting Lila cover

Posted on 15th March, by Sarah in Hunting Lila. No Comments

A couple of weeks ago I was sent the first proof of the cover for Hunting Lila.

My immediate reaction was to leap squealing from my seat. I loved it. I loved the sense of action and excitement conveyed, because the book is no mistakes a thriller – a paranormal thriller – but a thriller all the same, with murder, intrigue, plotting and enormous sexual tension to boot.

I wasn’t so sure about the shoes though at first – and as a friend on facebook pointed out – she’s not going to be able to run very far from the truth in them heels. The cover is actually a scene from the book – the crux scene where Lila discovers something awful about herself and the people she loves – and has to suddenly flee. And she is wearing a blue … Read More »
